Despite this obvious disadvantage, East Fife proved that they were a force to be reckoned with in the years between the two World Wars; when the Scottish Cup final was reached in 1927; promotion to the top flight was achieved for the first time in 1930; and the Scottish Cup was won in 1938.
East Fife’s halcyon days, however, came in the late 1940’s and throughout a large part of the 1950’s, when the club won the Scottish League Cup three times and came agonisingly close to winning the Scottish League Championship in 1953. They also appeared in the final of the Scottish Cup for a third time in 1950.
As a result of this remarkably successful period, during which time crowds of over 20,000 were not uncommon at Bayview Park, East Fife were for many years considered to be the most successful ‘Provincial’ club in Scottish football.
It was inevitable, therefore, that the players who achieved this success during the halcyon days; and, to a lesser extent, during the earlier years of the club’s success, were at some point going to come to the attention of the international selectors. As a result, six East Fife players were capped for Scotland no fewer than sixteen times at full international level between 1931 and 1953. Incredibly, thirteen of these appearances were squeezed into a five-year period between 1948 and 1953!
In addition to the aforementioned sixteen caps at full international level, East Fife players also played for Scotland during the late 1940’s and throughout the 1950’S in “unofficial” internationals, Scottish League internationals, and for the Scotland ‘B’ team.
This book details the international appearances of all East Fife players who have worn the dark blue of Scotland; at full international level; for the Scottish League XI; for the Scotland ‘B’ Team; in unofficial Scotland internationals; for the Scotland Under-21 team; for the Scotland Amateur team; for the Scotland Youth side (Under-20); and for the Scotland Semi-Professional Side.
Brief details of those players who played for Scotland at full international level either before or after playing for the club, or before managing the club, are also included.
